BCHC Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Among the most common types of cancers, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.  It is suggested that women age 40 and older or those who have a family history of breast cancer receive a yearly breast examination, including mammograms to aide in prevention and early detection of breast cancer.

In 2014, the Radiology Department at BCHC performed over 700 mammograms.  Year to date, 500 mammograms have been performed at BCHC.  Recently passing their annual mammography inspection for the 11th consecutive year, the Radiology Department is proud to provide the service of digital mammography as a powerful tool for prevention and early detection of breast cancer.  In addition to providing radiology services for women’s health, BCHC provides a Women’s Health and OB/GYN clinic, and comprehensive surgical breast cancer procedures, such as mastectomies, lumpectomies, and lymph node removal on site.MMPink

Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October, BCHC employees participated in a “Pink Out” day on Friday, October 9th.  During the event, a check in the amount of $210.00 was presented by the employees of BCHC to the Beyond Pink Team associated with the Care for Yourself Program. In 2014, the Beyond Pink Team donated three grants to residents of Buchanan County, totaling $1,775.

BCHC Mammography is a participant in the “Care for Yourself: The Iowa Breast and Cervical Cancer Detection Program,” which provides free cancer screenings. Eligibility is based on a woman’s age and personal financial situation. Priority is given to women who are 40 or older and are due for a screening or have not had a screening in several years. Assistance can be provided not only to women without insurance, but also to those who have a deductible or co-pay which is more than they can afford.  The Beyond Pink Team provides additional assistance to those receiving breast cancer treatments, or who are in remission.  Financial aid can be granted to assist with outstanding medical bills, equipment and medications, travel, and cost of living expenditures.

For more information about the Beyond Pink Team, including request for financial assistance, visit www.cedarvalleybreastcancer.com or call 319-292-2225.  To schedule a routine mammogram, contact the BCHC Radiology Department at 319-332-0870.  For more information, visit www.bchealth.org or follow Buchanan County Health Center on Facebook.
