BCHC Specialty Clinic Announces GI Clinic & Expanded Surgical Services
The Specialty Clinic at Buchanan County Health Center is pleased to announce the addition of GI Services. Dr. Ana Alardin will visit BCHC from Cedar Valley Medical Specialists and will begin regular rotation on the 22nd of October. Dr. Alardin will visit BCHC on the 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoons of each month.
In addition to holding clinic hours, Dr. Alardin will join the team of highly trained general surgeons performing GI procedures, including colonoscopies, conveniently close to home; Dr. Gerrelts and Dr. Houghton from Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, and Dr. Leo, general surgeon and family practitioner from Oelwein.
Colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis in men and women in the United States, affecting about 1 in 20 individuals. Acting as a preventative measure, a routine colonoscopy allows for BCHC providers to view the inner lining of a patient’s large intestine and colon to look for and find any ulcers, polyps, tumors, and/or areas of inflammation or bleeding. It is recommended by the American Cancer Society that men and women ages 50 or older should receive a routine colonoscopy every 10 years.
