BCHC welcomes Ben Stevens as new CFO
The Buchanan County Health Center is pleased to welcome Ben Stevens as Chief Financial Officer.
As CFO, Stevens will oversee the Finance Department, Information Technology, Plant Services, Health Information Management (HIM), and Purchasing. He most recently served as Business Manager for Surgical Services at UnityPoint Allen Hospital and brings expertise in financial reporting, data analytics and project management to his new post.
Stevens, a native of Denver, IA, said the size of the community was one of the reasons he was interested in this CFO position.
“I prefer the smaller communities that value family and relationships,” he explained. “My job will entail managing a vast amount of information, but trusting the leaders in these departments to make the best possible decision that places the hospital in a better position for future success.”
He also looks forward to working with current BCHC leadership team.
“We have been blessed with one of the most forward thinking, intelligent CEO’s in the area,” he said. “Steve may be younger than most CEO’s, but I bet that most other leaders could not keep up with his progressive thinking and his ability to interact and relate with others.”
Another BCHC strength he sees is the staff.
“While walking around the halls of BCHC, I was purposely trying to get lost,” Stevens explained. “Getting lost is sometimes the best way to figure out the way. While out, I was repeatedly asked if I needed help or could be pointed in the right direction. I was greeted with smiles and introductions. People here have a genuine way of being nice and caring, which again sets us apart from competition. It is the people in departments that deal with our patients and families that will allow us to succeed in the future.”
He also believes BCHC is well positioned for growth and success moving forward.
“Some may think that locating a hospital in Independence, IA may be its downfall, but we are in the middle of the best of both worlds,” he said. “We have access to a large amount of specialty providers from Cedar Rapids and Waterloo which provide the same level of service as large, urban hospitals. But, we provide the personal and caring touch that is missed at large hospitals where patients are considered numbers rather than people.”
“We are very pleased to welcome Ben to our team,” said Steve Slessor, CEO. “Ben has a proven track record of financial leadership creating success in both healthcare and non-healthcare arenas. His ability to view our organization from both an insider and outsider vantage point is a great asset.”
“Ben is also one of the best individuals I have met in my career,” Slessor added. “His integrity is without match; he is kind, honest, a hard worker, and a great relationship builder. He is a great addition to our organization.”
Ben, his wife Bethany, and their four children – Natalie, 5, Jacob, 4, Abigail, 2, and Evelyn, 7 months, — make their home in Jesup.
