The Buchanan County Health Center (BCHC) is pleased to announce the availability of expanded orthopedic surgical services at the hospital in Independence. BCHC is partnering with Cedar Valley Medical Specialists orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Benjamin Torrez, to provide patients with the opportunity to have their surgical procedures locally.

In 2010, BCHC opened a state-of-the-art surgical suite including several viewing monitors and a C-arm, a diagnostic piece of equipment, commonly used for orthopedic surgical services including various bone fracture repairs, scopes, foot surgery, pain management and joint replacement.

“To fully utilize our great facilities, the Board of Trustees has been looking at the potential for expanding surgical services with additional specialties,” said CEO Steve Slessor. “This is an ideal partnership. In all areas of service, our patients and their families have indicated that the convenience provided by offering medical and surgical services locally is important to them.  Expanded orthopedic surgical services will allow Buchanan County patients to do their pre-op visits, surgery, recovery and rehabilitation all in the same place, close to home.”

Cedar Valley Medical Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Roswell Johnston, has offered office hours in the BCHC Specialty Clinic since 2002. Dr. Torrez joined this practice in 2013 after completing his orthopedic surgery residency training from Michigan State University’s Pontiac campus.  Dr. Torrez was fortunate to obtain his training in pediatric orthopedic surgery, hip and knee reconstruction, orthopedic trauma and sports medicine at the Detroit Medical Center.  His program also has an affiliation with the University Medical Center, Las Vegas, NV, the four state region’s only Level 1 trauma center. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Orthopedic Trauma Association.

BCHC Orthopedics can assist patients with a variety of orthopedic needs including:
