BCHC Auxiliary Scholarships Available

The Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary is continuing its commitment to assist local students pursuing health care careers. In 2014, the Auxiliary will make six $1,000 scholarships available.  By comparison, in 2009, four $750 scholarships were available.

Successful applicants must be residents of Buchanan County and be accepted into an institution of higher learning with the objective of entering a medical health related field that is recognized by members of the Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary. Successful applicants in the past have become doctors, nurses, radiology technicians, laboratory technicians, physical therapists, nurse practitioners and dental hygienists to name a few.

Scholarships will be awarded to students in three distinct categories:

  1. 2014 graduates from East Buchanan, Independence and Jesup high schools. Seniors are invited to apply for one $1,000 scholarship awarded through each school’s Dollars for Scholars programs. Please contact your high school guidance counselor for more information about your school’s Dollars for Scholars application process.
  2. Non-traditional students. BCHC Auxiliary identifies these applicants as students who have returned to schools after working a few years in a health-care or other occupational field, or have left the workforce for a period of time to care for family. Two $1,000 scholarships are available. Applicants are asked to submit a completed application form, their most recent most recent transcript and SAT or ACT composite scores (if available), a letter of recommendation completed by a non-family member and an approximately 500-word personal profile introducing the applicant and including ways he/she has been involved in the community, as well as reasons why he/she should be considered for this scholarship. Application forms are available online at www.bchealth.info. Application deadline is April 1.
  3. Student attending a higher education institution, pursuing a degree in a human health care field. One $1,000 scholarship will be available.

Applicants will be selected by the BCHC Auxiliary Scholarship Committee. Winners and two guests will be asked to attend the Auxiliary’s Scholarship Dinner on Thursday, June 5, at the First Presbyterian Church, Independence, and beginning at 5:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Peggy Magner, BCHC Auxiliary Scholarship Chair, peggymagner@indytel.com or 319-334-2829.
