Buchanan County Launching Nurse Honor Guard to Recognize and Honor Nurses’ Lifetime of Service
Buchanan County Health Center (BCHC) is preparing to launch the Buchanan County Nurse Honor Guard in early 2027, creating a meaningful way to recognize and honor nurses who have dedicated their lives to caring for others.
The Buchanan County Nurse Honor Guard will provide a dignified tribute honoring nurses at the end of their lives, recognizing their commitment to the nursing profession and the lasting impact they have made on patients, families, and communities.
The Nurse Honor Guard tradition is part of a growing movement across the country that honors the legacy of nursing through ceremonial tributes performed by fellow nurses. Inspired by the traditions of the nursing profession and the legacy of Florence Nightingale, these ceremonies incorporate meaningful symbols of nursing service, including the lamp and other traditional elements that represent compassion, dedication, and the lifelong calling of nursing.
Similar to the way military and public safety organizations honor their members, the Nurse Honor Guard provides a final tribute from one nurse to another. Volunteer nurses may participate in bedside tributes, funeral services, and memorial ceremonies to recognize the life and service of fellow nurses.
“We are excited to bring this meaningful tradition to Buchanan County,” said local Honor Guard Coordinator, Tracey Guthrie, RN. “Nurses dedicate their careers to caring for others, often during some of life’s most difficult moments. The Nurse Honor Guard provides an opportunity for us to honor their service, celebrate their legacy, and ensure they receive the recognition they deserve.”
The Buchanan County Nurse Honor Guard is seeking nursing professionals, both active and retired, who are interested in volunteering with the program.
Participation is not limited to Buchanan County residents. Nurses from surrounding communities who feel called to be part of this special initiative are encouraged to express their interest.

Additional information, training opportunities, and program details will be shared with interested volunteers as preparations continue for the official launch in early 2027.
